We wanted to make digital archives "playable"

The world is full of unfathomably huge digital archives of incredibly interesting things. Every academic library, every museum, even the web itself is full of giant collections of things, but despite many folks' best intentions, these archives are usually not too connected with an audience who may be interested in seeing those objects and talking to each other about them.

That's what the Playable Archive is here for. With this platform, developed by researchers at the University of Pittsburgh's School of Computing and Information, we've taken digital archives and turned them into big virtual worlds; museums built to allow users to explore the contents of the archive, make their own exhibits, and talk to each other about it.

An Academic Collaboration

Researchers at the University of Pittsburgh created the Playable Archive as a collaboration between researchers in the School of Computing and Information, experts at the Carnegie Museum of Art, and community members in Pittsburgh's Hill District who have particular expertise on the Teenie Harris Archive, which drove the system's original development.

Community-Curation

Curate your own exhibits in the Playable Archive's collection system! Make a collection out of anything you see and turn it into your own exhibit that other users can visit and start a conversation around. Archives like the ones we've worked with can hold thousands of stories, and we're giving you the tools to tell one yourself.

Join a Conversation

Leave comments on anything you see, entering a conversation that remains a permanent part of the exhibit (no pressure!). We find that a museum is better when it reflects the community who visit it.

Users on the Playable Archive have already explored a whole lot of history
